Coach Lyle began his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) journey in May 2012 at Rilion Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in Houston, where he trained daily learning the competition style of the martial art. After five years at the rank of blue belt 4th degree, he changed his training to be more self-defense driven and became a student under professors Ryron and Rener Gracie at the Gracie University in Torrance, California. For the past six years, he has been training locally under Jackson Fortunato at Gracie Jiu-Jitsu West Houston. Coach Lyle is now a certified Gracie University Instructor under the Gracie brothers and most recently achieved the rank of brown belt 4th degree. He and his family of four have been calling Houston their home for 13 years. Coach Lyle’s wife Laura is Brazilian born and was his inspiration to begin training BJJ, among many other life-enriching adventures. The Mathes family are active members of Second Baptist Church and serve God wholeheartedly.
Coach Jacob, a native Houstonian who grew up in Second Ward, started his self-defense journey with boxing at age 15. In 2001, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he was introduced to mixed martial arts, and his passion for self-defense grew. Upon being honorably discharged in 2005, he continued his education and teaching in what is known as the Seven Skills (firearms, hand-to-hand combat, edged weapons, CQB, medical, fitness, and leadership). Becoming a father further inspired him to continue practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). Using the Gracie University online curriculum, he began teaching his then four-year-old son from home, and his dedication to the art magnified. For the past two years, he has trained with Professor Jackson Fortunato at Gracie Jiu-Jitsu West Houston and is now a certified Gracie University Instructor under Ryron and Rener Gracie. Coach Jacob steadily demonstrates commitment and heart for training his students, but above all is a devoted husband and father who puts God first in all things.

There are no prerequisites for classes at Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Mayde Creek. You don't need to be strong, flexible, fast, or in good shape. Come as you are.
Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Mayde Creek instructors, staff and existing students will welcome you with open arms to ensure you feel comfortable and safe, especially if you've never participated in jiu-jitsu. The hardest decision is to show up, but once you experience the confidence boost and the camaraderie, it's priceless. This is the reason we have the 10-day free trial, so you can try it before committing.
Ask yourself this question: "Why do I have an interest to learn jiu-jitsu?" Your answers will vary, but you may have said self-defense, to get fit, or just to have fun. So please give us a try! Our method of teaching is for everyone, whether new or fully trained in the art. Classes are taught as if you do not have experience. To schedule a trial, you can stop by in person or call us at 832-900-3164.
Our priority is to maintain a positive environment where students, regardless of experience, can partake in training that is pleasant and pain-free at every visit. All belted students coming from another gym must complete one cycle of Combatives classes to gain an understanding of our academy culture, which is centered around safety and self-defense. We encourage any seasoned practitioner to come train at our academy and to lend a hand to other students whenever possible.
If you are in the area, stop by while we are open. We would love to meet you.
